Style Challenge: Maximalism

We back with our Style Challenge series. Typically we challenge the personal style of our team, but it looks like this one was really easy for them. Probably because all they had to do was let their creativity run free!

Welcome back,

Welcome to our Style Challenge series, once again. This time to quote the incredible Kendrick Lamar we about to “Pop out and show n*****s”. We recently covered the aesthetic of maximalism, the literal opposite of minimalism, and the freedom that comes along with it.

Our lovely voulunteers, our awesome challengers if you will, are here to show out, in vivacious, loud and eccentric outfits. The idea for this week is to express yourself, by doing all that you can. Bring out your favorite prints, bring out those jeans you couldnt find a reason to wear, bring out that fur in the back of your closet. Bring it all out and SHOW OUT!!

Let the show begin!

Tried and True Maxi-Boo

First up we have the illustrious Tina! Tina absolutely heard us say do the most, and she said hold her bag. Actually we couldn’t because she wa in it! There is an excellent use of layers here, from the top, with the scarf and jacket all the way down top the double layer slouch socks. This is such a classic and fun approach to Maximalism.

Tina also shows off how outfits can be interesting not only by color, texture or shape but by silhouette too. I love how she has the short skirt with the long plaid trench coat. The skirt being a solid color also adds to the business of the outfit. As well as with the choice of sneakers being a simpler style as well. It invites more creativity elsewhere.

When people hear Maximalism they often do think, more layers. Which is a great approach. My favorite part of that approach however is how the outfits can come across as chaotic, but also synergetic. The colors all work off of each other so well. i am personally a big fan of coordinating colors as opposed to “matching”, and Tina executed that brilliantly.

When approaching Maximalism it’s okay to lean on solid, more simplistic pieces to create a sense of balance. When you do this it allows you to take other aspects of the outfit further. Similar to how She does with the socks and the scarf. With the skirt being a solid in the middle it breaks up all the use of patterns

Our boy Khaos never fails to provide layers. Honestly might be is trademark at this point/ With that being said, he does a superb job at creating an outfit around one specific piece. There are so many layers here done in a way that looks subtle but actually showcases a great understanding of how to use colors.

Speaking of colors, please notate the light but not really flex with the Tiffany Blue Timbs that he just casually pulled out. To be very honest I am adoring how well the green camo jacket and the timbs compliment each other. It’s a very outside of the box choice that really paid off in the end.

Now I do have to show great appreciation to the Sunny Rain hat.

Maximum Cool

Khaos genuinely needs to give a class on how to find a good jacket, or outwear piece at this point. There is so much going on here subtly that at first glance you’re not sure how it fits maximalism. The proof is in the minor details though. The Sunny Rain hat has its own unique busyness to it [which will be discussed at a later date], and the its paired with the letterman. As the colors are the same, thats where the matching takes a pause until we reach the shoes.

The jeans that Khaos pairs with this outfit looks simple enough at first glance. Upon a closer looks you see the very fun and creative details towards the bottom. There’s color, texture and a tear in the inseam that give them a lot of personality. The jeans are actually a good point to then tie in the bag. Khaos is a huge Basquiat fan, so the jeans really showcase that. Sometimes when you’re doing the most its in the little details too.

Another great outfit and another great jacket. As well as some great scenery usage to really make the outfit pop out. All three outfits approached maximalism in a creatively subtle way/ it’s not typically what you’d think of, and thats the best part. You get to define what it is to you.

Doing the MOST but do more

If Brandon is going to do anything, it is always going to be the most. probably my favorite aspect of how he approaches these challenges are with such unique and interesting pieces. what better time to show them off than now? Like do you see that grill? Do you see those shades? Truly only a combination I could trust Brandon to come up with. Not to mention the fun and funky hat and jacket to not only add some color but some pizzazz as well.

From the outfit to the setting, when you look up Maximalist in the dictionary, you may just see one of Brandon’s pictures in there. There is so much going on here and you really just gotta love all of it.

We have a cow print hat, with a pink letterman, topped off with a Sailor Moon tote. An outfit No one else could even remotely pull off or think to put together so well. How does all of this work? Well every color used in this outfit can primarily be found somewhere else in the outfit. and if the color isn’t anywhere else in the outfit … then its just there for the vibes and the vibes are vibing.

When does an outfit ever call for a large plushie Pikachu? whenever it possibly can. If you can include Pikachu, you should include Pikachu. That is something I greatly admire about Brandon, he really leans into his personality and interests when putting a look together. because nerd can absolutely be fashion icons too. Outside of the plushie, the bag is such a great eye catcher. It stands, out from an already very interesting outfit.

The way that the overall are unbottomes and falls at the wait somehow makes it look like thats how they’re meant to be worn. The quilted jacket and the knitted hat. Brandon has so many pieces that are simple, and something the average shopper would overlook, but Brandon is going to turn it into one of the most interesting outfits, you’d never see coming.

The use of color is what makes this outfit so beautifully maximalist. Everything is so bright, and everything so works.

Every piece being worn here is easily an attention grabber in its own right. But you cant look me in the eye and tell me that you’d ever think to pair that hat with those pants.

This look is very similar to Tina and Khaos’ concepts of utilizing color to make it bold. Except Brandon just said… brighter. I love how in two of his outfits he pulled in glasses as a statement accessory. Although extremely loud, this approach is more toned down on its approach. Maximalism can very easily be simply eye catching bright colors and patterns, with accessories that really stand out.

Did You bring extra?

Our resident Next Top Model has entered the chat. If you haven’t learned by now chi Chi has never come to play, she came to SLAY. And thats exactly what happens here.

This look is extremely extra in all the most perfect ways possible. How often do you see a beautiful woman mummified in sheer patterned garments? The answer to that I would think is this is the first time, but I don’t know your life. The patterns Chi Chi is wearing by all means technically should clash, and yet they don’t. the play off of each other, one doesn’t take away for the other. the whole outfit kind of just dances in synastry. The chunky heels and the denim shorts add even more playfulness to an already majestic and whimsical outfit. Chi Chi took a simple route to achieve a maximalist look here. It’s not a matter of layers on layers and playing with textures. instead she’s playing with the busyness of patterns. I am absolutely stunned here.

This look is a more simple take on maximalism, but still doing a whole hell of a lot. Do you peep the light flex of the Off-White belt? Our team really loves to show out with the statement pieces. I appreciate how the colors are simple, yet there are various textures here. the sheer top, paired with the trousers, topped off with a messenger hat. The colors coordinate, and the textures do too. Even with how simple of an approach this is, seeing someone wear this on the street you’re going to immediately think that they’re doing a lot.

So much we have leftovers

As you can see, there are so many approaches that can be taken to Maximalism. Find what works for you. In a lot of ways maximalism is typically the easiest way to portray as much of your personality as you can. Although it’s not the only way to display your personality, it is definitely one of the easiest, as well as the most versatile. There’s so much to enjoy about the way each of them portrayed the style. I hope you’re all as inspired as I am.
